Meet Casey

"And as of 8:42 this morning, Snow White was the fairest of them all."  This was the first solo speaking line 8 year old Casey had in his second grade school play.  Casey is a truly remarkable boy who began using his Tobii C12 with CEye in October of 2009.  Casey is fully included in a general education classroom at his neighborhood public school.  He is able to access all of his academic subjects on pages in his device as well as independently take his weekly spelling test (and study for it!).  Through some programming magic, Casey can 'read aloud' the passages in his Reading book and take part in classroom discussions on the vocabulary in Science and Social Studies.  He visually scans accurately and efficiently through his math page to give his answers as part of the whole class homework review.  He has been the class poet and class comic and his classmates love when Casey uses his Tobii C12 to communicate with them.  

After school, Casey’s home aide assists him with his homework using the Tobii, as well as practicing conversational speech.  Casey has always been very expressive with his facial expressions and pointing with his eyes, and now it is amazing to actually ‘hear’ Casey’s thoughts, especially when unprompted.  His favorite thing to talk about is his classmates, which is the very first page he will always navigate to.  He shows how much he loves school when he described one of his teachers by saying, “Mrs. Cederquist is like mom to me.”  And he shows his funny side when he tells the babysitters to “Go!” or “Leave now” and then starts laughing.  He is becoming more and more detailed with his descriptions which confirms what everyone around him has always known – he is so intelligent and doesn’t miss a thing.  He recently described his grandmother’s surprise party by saying “She was nervous and unsure. After she was thankful about people going to the party.  I was excited for grandma.”

Casey's ability to recall information as he navigates through the modules, pages and buttons of his Tobii C12 shows this device will begin to help him unlock the immense creativity he possesses and exhibits on a daily basis.
