Training: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Eye Control is a relatively new access method in the field of Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC). However, the technology leading towards modern day eye control has been in development for quite some time. This presentation will discuss the history of eye control technology, the modern principles and applications of eye control, and how this new access method can be utilized in the field of AAC. Additionally, suggestions for how to objectively conduct clinical evaluations, determine a rationale for using/not using eye control, and funding justifications will be provided and discussed.

The VA Speech Pathology Service is the nation’s largest single employer of speech-language pathologist. Their speech pathologists participate in the evaluation and treatment of speech, language, cognitive and swallowing disorders due to a wide range of etiologies from acute neurogenic disorders and traumatic brain injury to head and neck cancer. Services include diagnostic assessments including the modified barium swallow videofluroscopy, provision of prosthetic communication devices, and speech/language/cognitive evaluation and rehabilitation. Approximately 100 specialists from the VA are expected to attend this important educational event.

This unique session, June 20-25 2010, is for campers ages 12-18 who are struggling readers and is under the direction of national literacy experts, Drs. David Koppenhaver and Karen Erickson. Campers' reading skills range from beginning readers to reading several years behind grade level. In addition to enjoying the full range of fun camp activities, campers work daily with educators on literacy-related activities. Informal descriptive reports of literacy assessments and interventions, including assistive technology, are provided to families and campers to take back to their home schools. Campers attending this session should be independent in their personal care needs and have a means of communication, which may include an AAC (augmentative communication) system.
